CAD Resources is a Computer Aided Drafting consultancy specialising in the preparation of clients drafting and graphical documentation needs and also the preparation of data sets to meet clients GIS requirements. Our staff commenced using CAD systems with their initial introduction, as main frame systems, in Western Australia. We have continued to use various systems from main frames to personnel computers and networked PC based CAD systems. The following comments are intended as generic descriptions of a basic CAD system.

CAD systems were originally developed to digitally capture the data that was previously captured on hard copy plans. The benefits of this were firstly that the data could be consistently reproduced quickly and that the time of revisions was dramatically reduced while maintaining the quality. The first systems were vector based and divided into two types of systems, those that capture the data in a 2D file structure and those that have a true 3D file structure. These systems had an associated program language, a data layering structure and a library of line styles, fonts and symbols. The use of the associated program languages and the improvement in the internal features has greatly increased the users productivity using the systems.

The difference between CAD and GIS systems is becoming blurred with the internal attributes and database linkages enhancing the CAD capability. An efficient CAD system has a full suite of element structures (e.g. lines, text, ellipses, shapes, curves, grouped complex elements, points), real world measurement system and an efficient data interrogating facility. CAD systems can now effectively handle raster data sets and can combine these with the existing vector data sets.

There are a currently a diverse range of CAD systems on the market, however, it is important when selecting a system to ensure that the digital files are compatible with prospective clients and that the software is flexible.

There are a number of third party software packages that further enhance the performance of he basic CAD systems and some of the CAD systems now available have been specifically developed for particular applications.

Check out our CAD/GIS section of the Links page for some vendor help.

CAD Resources can assist you in your CAD selection and also in defining your CAD organisation and management requirements without being hindered by vendors bias. We have a close working relationship with various vendors and can help you liase with them if necessary. We can also identify the various third party options that are available to enhance your system and prepare a detailed submission including the costing and timing to achieve your goals.
